Planting Seeds of Aspiration: AmeyaPriya Journey from Aayathur to Mumbai
In a small village classroom at PUMS Ayathur, Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, 10-year-old Ameyapriya of grade 5
quietly stood out. Though soft-spoken, her confidence in learning, especially in English,
set her apart from her peers. With consistent guidance from her teacher Mr. Chitharthan, AmeyaPriya took part in the WPC Grand Finale 2025
held in Mumbai, a first of its kind experience for AmeyaPriya. “This kind of experience leaves a lasting impression—it plants the seeds of
confidence, aspiration, and ambition,” says Chitharthan sir.
“The students in the region now feel- If AmeyaPriya can… Why Can’t we? This pushes them to try even harder in learning the language.”
AmeyaPriya secured 2nd place in the WPC 2025, making her teachers, friends and school proud!
A Young Aspirant from the Fields of Guna
Naman, a bright and confident 4th grader from Gwarkheda village in Guna district, Madhya Pradesh,
has been a familiar face at the Word Power Championship (WPC). For the past three years, he has consistently represented his state at the national level
in Mumbai—a rare and commendable achievement for someone so young.
The teacher behind Naman’s consecutive success at the WPC is Mr. Arun Kognokur sir, and the other teachers from NMS Gwarkheda government School, at Guna.
“ELP teaches techniques to read complex words. As teachers from Hindi medium background we too are learning along with our students,” shares Arun Sir.
He proudly notes that English levels in his school are now better than many others in the district. Students are gradually shifting from writing sentences in
Hindi to trying them in English.
A Revolution of Will: Asha Mam’s Journey in Jalgaon
Having registered with the ELP a little before lockdown, Asha Bhalchandra Patil, an assistant teacher in Jalgaon, Maharashtra,
transformed a two-room school located in the slums of Jalgaon into a hub of 300 students. Asha Mam continued to teach despite the setbacks,
and her consistent efforts bore fruit when two of her students participated at the State Finals of WPC in the state,
securing 2nd and 3rd ranks. “Teaching is not just a job; it is my mission, my breath, my purpose.” she shares passionately.
Speaking of the challenging socio-economic conditions of most students in the school, she believes “Education is the most powerful way to
bring change”. Asha Mam continues to teach and inspire her students, proving that “even grains of sand can be rubbed to extract oil.”
In the tribal heartland of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, Baldaoo Shyam Sir transformed English from a barrier into a gateway.
A teacher for 13 years, he adopted Nihar Shanti Pathshala Funwala English Literacy Program's scientific techniques to simplify complex words.
“The children who once feared English slowly started reading words with confidence,” he shares.
His dedicated efforts helped one of his students Shraddha Porte emerge as top finalist from her grade in the
Chhattisgarh WPC 2025 State Finals. Baldaoo Sir, who continues to mentor students for competitive exams today,
believes this success “belongs to the entire village” and proves that rural students can compete at the highest levels.
When Commitment Becomes Change
At GMS Nakshi, a fairly large school with only one teacher handling English, Dhomne Sir stands out as a true “Teacher Hero”.
Speaking about the challenges faced in the region, Dhomne sir shares that many children in the region live with their
grandparents when parents migrate for work, making school their primary—often only—source of academic learning.
Thus, Dhomne sir goes beyond his regular school duties, displaying charts of common words and alphabet sounds in the classroom,
which students actively use for reading practice. He also posts content using ELP on YouTube for other students to access.
Dhomne Sir’s positive attitude and consistent use of ELP methods has created a supportive learning environment for students in the Balaghat region of MP.
