about us

Una, mutationem afferamus.

Could you read this? Did you understand it?

This is exactly how millions of Indian children feel every day when they attempt to read English. To them, English often appears as a collection of unfamiliar and meaningless symbols—just like the phrase above.

When children are unable to read or understand English, it does more than slow their learning. It quietly erodes their confidence, makes classrooms feel intimidating, and distances them from textbooks, exams, and discussions. Over time, this struggle limits their choices and closes doors to opportunities that depend on language proficiency.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to help these children unlock the English language and with it, their future?

The above Latin phrase means Together, let us bring change.

Who we are

LeapForWord is a product NGO committed to eliminating the single biggest bottleneck — Poor English Capabilities —that prohibits regional language school students from accessing Professional Education & hence better Employment Opportunities.

Our Vision

An end-state where children from underserved communities can access Higher Education Opportunities of their choice, which to date they couldn’t due to poor English capabilities.

Our mission

We will solve the chronic legacy problem of English Illiteracy by developing effective, easy-to-use, & economical teaching/learning techniques for teachers & students from regional language schools across India.

the problem

The existing pedagogies of English learning in India necessitates the need for English speaking teachers in classrooms. However, most government school teachers in rural India have not been trained effectively in English. As a result, even the most passionate and hardworking teachers are limited to teaching only the basics such as alphabets and vocabulary, which does not adequately equip students to navigate the complex English language requirement in advanced grades.

The learning gap widens as students reach higher education, where many professional courses in fields such as Engineering, Finance, Medicine, and Technology are offered only in English. Unable to cope with the language barrier, students are forced to either drop out or choose subjects which are available in regional languages, further limiting their access to education and employment opportunities.

the solution

To address the problem, we have designed an alternate pedagogy that eliminates the need of an English-speaking teacher in every classroom. We have developed a phonic-based translation algorithm which translates English into any Sanskrit-based Indian language. On top of this, we have developed a product called the English Literacy Program (ELP), a structured curriculum consisting of 4 Learning Levels, developed to make English teaching and learning faster, easier and affordable. By making English teaching independent of English speaking, we believe any teacher from across India will be able to teach and strengthen English capabilities among students.

Students

Our direct beneficiaries are children between ages 7 to 14 (Grades 2 to 8), who study in regional language government schools, 97% of whom belong to rural, poor, and marginalized regions and communities.

Teachers

We believe teachers are the most important tool to create an impact amongst the students. We collaborate with teachers who are responsible for teaching English in a location where the children have little opportunity to improve their English capabilities.

Government

We enter in partnership with State Education Departments and District Authorities by signing MoUs with respective departments, which offer us credibility and support.

Civil Society Organizations

We partner with Civil Society Organizations to gather support, and for implementation of ELP and the FLN Mission in select regions. We have collaborated with Ibtada in Rajasthan, to implement our Teacher Entrepreneur Project in Alwar district of Rajasthan. We have collaborated with NGOs Room To Read, and Sampark Foundation to implement the FLN Championship in Jharkhand.
